Margret was still at her loom weaving when I came back from interviewing lead artist Katherine Pannepacker. I sat down for a second round of questions as she grabbed a new strip and began to weave again. The project consists of strips of parachute cloth, with quotes written by anyone who wants to, being woven together into mats to later be painted on.
How has the experience been so far? It's been challenging in a way that has made me reconsider my life. Its been inspiring that these people have so much positivity in such a difficult situation.
What is your favorite thing that has happened so far? I love being able to see people getting excited about being a part of the project.
What influence is your project having on the community? I usually carry a loom with me when i walk. People see it and don't know what it is, which opens and entire dialogue about the project and what it hopes to do. It's hard to tell at such an early stage what its truly accomplishing but it seems to be starting something.
What is your favorite form of transportation? I prefer walking but I use the subway too.
What is your favorite part of your project? I've seen people with no experience in art spend hours on a weaving. It gives them something positive to focus on.
What is the best quote that you've seen on a strip? Someone wrote "As long as the ties that bind us are stronger than those that pull us apart all will be well."
