The first site I vistited today was a couple blocks off the Berks El stop.Beverly Fisher is working in the Fishtown/Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. The project on Norris Street will take up a couple blocks. Working with a Mural Corps class and her asstistants and interns, Beverly plans to reinvent the whole street from Frankford Ave. to Front Street where the Berks stop on the El is located. There will be elements of paint, mosiac and concrete and everyone seems excited about getting started.
The Norris Street site consists of two parts, a beautiful garden studio where students are hard at work cutting glass for mosaics, and Norris St itself. The Norris Street mural will take up the majority of the block, going from building to building. At the time I arrived, two buildings had been primed and the students were busy mixing the paints under the direction of Kien Nguyen, one of Bev's assistants. Shannon Her was busy helping the students cut glass into shapes when I sat down to talk to her.

Why did you apply for the internship? I took a class with Jane, and even though I'd never painted before i enjoyed the class and the idea of the program; to have art promote community diversity. I also had some kind of portfolio so it was worth a shot.
What do you plan on gaining from this experience? I want to learn more about art education, I've also been learning how to work with glass.

How do you think art can change the world? I think art makes you think and appreciate things that you might not notice. Art makes the world a more beautiful place.
